“Must Be In Want of a Wife:” How Jane Austen’s novels Pride and Prejudice and Emma Provide a Shifting View of Marriage in Regency England
This paper examines the role of Jane Austen’s novels Emma and Pride and Prejudice in providing a shifting point of view regarding marriage. What once was, in England and other parts of the world, traditionally considered to be an economic contract now has more undertones of love and companionship. This can be seen through the various relationships and attempted relationships formed in the novels as well as the continual presence of the words “money” and “position” therein.
