Emma: Abuses of Social Power

Tessa A. Oliver
Dr. Hena Ahmad, Faculty Mentor

This paper will examine how Jane Austen portrays those of higher social ranking in her novel Emma. In "Aiding the Impoverished Gentlewomen: Power and Class in Emma," Mary-Elisabeth Fowkes Tobin looks at how Emma's flaws are revealed through her interactions with characters of the middle class. How does Emma's social power assist her manipulation of those around her? How else might she be abusing her social status when interacting with those below her?
