Conner Viets
Dr. Michael Bump, Faculty Mentor

This presentation shall provide an in-depth analysis and examination of Aurél Holló’s composition José / beFORe JOHN5José is perhaps the most well-known and widely performed member of the beFORe JOHN song cycle, a project launched in 1996 by members of the Amadina Percussion Group.  The series is comprised of nine different pieces each in some way pertaining to the number 153, a number serving an important role in ancient civilizations and early traditions.  Through the language of percussion instruments, the beFore JOHN series attempts to express the abundance of different things that surround us–transforming the world of percussion into a proverbial “percussion cosmos.”   José / beFORe JOHN5 embodies this mission through its unique synthesis of both traditional and non-traditional percussion instruments and techniques.  The result is a landmark addition to the percussion ensemble canon, pairing a mesmerizing display of virtuosity with compelling historical context.
