Connections of Music, Science, and Spirituality in Western History
Sara E. Murray
Prof. Shirley McKamie, Faculty Mentor

Since ancient times, humans have endeavored to understand the nature of the universe and our purpose in it. Our inherent curiosity drives us to discover the key to this knowledge. Science has satisfactorily approached the objective, yet alone cannot answer all questions. However, in combination with another discipline, music, science has the ability to become more than a mere systematic method. It is able to surpass the confines of physical observation and enter a different dimension, one that provides a possible answer to the nature of the universe. The interconnected patterns linking music and the physical world suggest the existence of a perfect order. Throughout history, philosophers, musicians and scientists considered this natural association, often referring to it as the “Harmony of the Spheres.” Recent scientific studies show that the true intricacies of this phenomenon are only beginning to be discovered.
