Persepolis: The Story of a Childhood, a memoir in graphic novel form by Marjane Satrapi, tells the story of the author growing up during the period of political instability and revolution in Iran in the 1970s and 80s. Satrapi's perspectives on life and her ability to escape oppression were greatly influenced by her mother and grandmother encouraging education and being a feminist. This paper will examine Satrapi's mother's values and their positive effect on Satrapi's youth and her coming-of-age.
