Janelle W. Walker*, Forrest E. Beck, and Carter A. Datz
Dr. Marc Rice, Faculty Mentor
Percussion instruments have many different members, ranging from drums and idiophones to auxillary members. Many of these instruments used in the 18th century are brought together to depict the warfare found in fox hunting created by Hugo Meynell. I studied diverse percussion instruments and extended technique from the 1700s. Forrest Beck studied the natural horn and the history from the 1700s and 1800s in a similar fashion. We researched these instruments while composer Carter Datz combined them into a modern piece. The composition demonstrates the natural horn and varying percussion instruments, including the traditional field drum, whistle, and whip, from the early 1700s through the setting of a modern composition based off of early fox hunting. These instruments are brought to life in this modern, 21st century piece.
