Applications of the Practices of 15th Century Musical Entrepreneurs for the 21st Century Musician
Patricia L. Brockman
Dr. Jocelyn Prendergast, Faculty Mentor

As traditional orchestral and academic positions in music become increasingly scarce, many musicians look to entrepreneurship as a solution. However, music entrepreneurship is not a new phenomenon. In this presentation I will be examining the musical entrepreneurs which emerged in the 15th century in both sacred and secular music. Musicians in the 21st century can learn a great deal from the methods and skills these medieval musicians put to use to create new employment opportunities in an emerging merchant class.
