"Cheers to the Children": Having an Alcoholic Parent
Collin Salamon-Certa
Dr. Hena Ahmad, Faculty Mentor

While the topic of alcoholism is controversial when it comes to the consideration of it being a disease, it is absolutely debilitating within the functioning of a family. Growing up with an alcoholic parent, I faced hardships that only those who have experienced having a parent with an addiction can relate to. Alcoholism in a parent can be absolutely debilitating to the process of a child growing up. Having a parent who experiences health and mental problems that are taboo to discuss and therefore become a secret can be detrimental to a child's social development, education, and most definitely home environment.
