A Clean Sheet
Sarah K. Burns

One of my biggest pet peeves is the phrase, "college is the best time of your life." There has to be a bigger step, a bigger goal to reach. Being young, a seemingly clean, easily impressionable slate, is constantly sought after or yearned for. These clean slates are crisp and delicate but the first impact it receives leaves a permanent impression on its surface. People become stuck with the idea that the wear received as we age is undesirable. This new mark is not a scar, but a new element that adds detail to the blank canvas. In this work, the sheets of cellophane become a metaphor for the experiences people receive as they age. Experiences leave impressions on us as we age and the cellophane receives more creases and imperfections as it is used. A person becomes a more elaborate person as they age and the cellophane gains complexity.
