Synthesis of Primary Erythritol Sulfate

Dr. Tim Humphry, Faculty Mentor
Many sulfate esters have been identified as significant air pollutants using mass spectrometry. In order to investigate the molecules in more depth, a gram amount of each ester must be synthesized. Butenediol, a commercially available reagent, is used in a multi-step process to synthesize a primary erythritol sulfate ester. After synthesis, the ester will be analyzed using NMR spectroscopy to confirm the structure of the product. The synthesis of primary erythritol sulfate is currently at the last step.
