Operation Condor: Public Problems with Covert Solutions
Joshua M. Sanders
Dr. David Robinson and Dr. Marc Becker, Faculty Mentors

I will be presenting on Operation Condor, based in the southern cone of South America. Operation Condor was a covert military operation by the right wing dictatorships of Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, Bolivia, and Brazil. Through cross border kidnappings, bombings, and assassinations these dictatorial governments led a campaign of political repression against any leftist sympathizers. More specifically I will examine the fine line the United States had to walk in responses to Operation Condor, looking closely at internal and external debates on how to best respond to these acts of terrorism and political repression. Recently declassified documents reveal the balancing act the United States played as a protector of democracy and human rights in the midst of the Cold War context and ideology.
