Scanning Tunneling Microscopy: Part II

Scanning Tunneling Microscopy is a science that was pioneered by Binnig and Rohrer with their development, in the early 1980's, of the scanning tunneling microscope. This invention has revolutionized the study of condensed matter, as it permits the inspection of materials on the atomic level. Here, a scanning tunneling microscope was designed and constructed under the auspices of an S.P.S. student research grant. The first presentation will provide a description of the design, construction, and implementation of this device, in addition to an overview of STM, and a discussion of some technical flaws encountered in the course of this project. The second will emphasize aspects of programming the driver, and the collection of data.
