The Power of Purple: Why Members of the Truman State University Community Participate in the Purple Friday Campaign
Emily C. Lowndes
Dr. James Cianciola , Faculty Mentor

Truman State University is more than just a college; it is a community. In this regard it is important to consider the question: what builds community at Truman? Thus, I argue that a member of the Truman State University community participates in the Purple Friday initiative because they experience a sense of belonging and support. Drawing upon current literature, particularly using Saussure and Barthes work on semiotics and the notion of connotative meaning, I am able to determine the motivation for community involvement in the Truman State University Purple Friday campaign.
