Prof. Liz Jorn and Dr. Jerry Mayhew, Faculty Mentors
For the success of an athletic program it is essential that a university understands the strengths of the institution and then locates, and successfully attracts potential athletes. College-choice factors can help universities better recruitment, and ultimately retain student-athletes that enhance their sport, athletic department, and institution. The purpose of this study was to examine the college-choice factors of Division II varsity athletes at Truman State University a member of the Mid-American Intercollegiate Athletic Association (N = 118). Using the Student-Athlete College-Choice Profile (Gabert, Hale, & Montalvo, 1999), the research sought to find differences between males, females, and individual teams to identify strategies to find athletes that will attend, compete, and graduate at Truman. Significant differences do exist between males, females, and individual sports. Historical team success creates differing responses. Males tended to focus on individual progress, and opportunities after Truman. Females tended towards team and university achievement.
