Take Off the Beer Goggles: A Rethinking of Czech Poetry
Catherine A. Duggan
Dr. James D'Agostino, Faculty Mentor
Last spring I studied abroad in Prague and realized the complicated history and conflicting identity of Czech people. I propose to present a collection of poems that parallels contemporary Czech writers and my own experience of living in Central Europe. I will analyze the significance of Czech poets in the tumultuous sphere after half a century under an oppressive communist government now being thrust into a rapidly growing capitalist society compared to my experience living in Prague as an American. My poems will illuminate on the strange and unsullied eyes that saw the Czech Republic, whereas the Czech poets have native voices that depict the country through an experienced, and often bitter lens. On first glance Czech people are resilient, peaceful, and talented brewers, but below the surface there is so much more that can only be understood by looking into the captivating Czech soul through writing.
