Secondhand Smoke, Otitis Media, and Related Hearing Loss
Lauren M. Dowdy* and Lauren M. Ruhmann
Dr. Ilene Elmlinger, Faculty Mentor

The purpose of this study was two-fold. The first objective was to determine the level of knowledge that various health care and education professionals have about otitis media, secondhand smoke exposure, and related hearing loss. The second objective was to identify these professionals attitudes about sharing sensitive information about the connection between secondhand smoke, hearing loss, and speech and language delays with their clients and caregivers. Selected speech-language pathologists, teachers, audiologists, nurses, and other related health care and education professionals in Missouri were invited to complete a questionnaire to assess these objectives.
