Puoi Ascoltare: A Musical Interpretation of a Poem
Curtis J. Worzalla♦
Dr. Warren Gooch, Faculty Mentor

The art music composer must understand intimately the meaning of any written text they choose to set to music, as the composer acts as a lens through which the listener will experience the text. Thus, the composer's music must help lead the listener to a proper interpretation of the poem. To better understand this process, the presenter has composed an art song for voice and piano, using a poem written by a friend of the composer. In this poem, the poet sets up an opposition between the real world in which our time is governed by external forces and the broader sense in which time is viewed on its own terms. The presentation will begin with a discussion of the poem and the musical means by which the composer chose to interpret it, and will conclude with a performance of the composition.
