Vocal Challenges for Male Singers in J.S. Bach's Christ Lag In Todesbanden

Dr. Mark Jennings, Faculty Mentor
Performing Baroque music, especially the music of J.S. Bach can be extremely edifying for young musicians. However, this style of music includes vocal challenges that demand much from young male singers, particularly for young tenors. Bach's Cantata Number 4, Christ Lag In Todesbanden, has been used as a case study for examining some of these vocal challenges. During Truman State University Chamber Choir's preparation of this work, the conductors devised and applied practical solutions to help the singers negotiate the inherent difficulties for the male singers. The goal of this study was to attempt to create a clear and effective pedagogical approach to teaching this music in order to create a satisfying performance.
