Love in and of itself is a beautiful thing. In the wrong situation however, the wrong type of love can have very adverse affects, culminating in tragedy. This paper seeks to pinpoint the root of tragedy in Arundhati Roy's The God Of Small Things by examining the various types of love present in the story, the influence of love on the characters' actions, and the results of these actions done in the name of love. On the surface, love can easily be blamed for the tragedies that occur. A feminist and cultural examination of The God of Small Things will reveal that it is not love, but the patriarchal caste society that limits the ways in which love can occur that causes tragedy.
