Group Lessons in School Music Programs
Jessie J. O'Dell♦
Dr. Jay Bulen, Faculty Mentor

Music lessons are traditionally taught on an individual basis, with one-on-one interaction between teacher and student. Group lessons, however, have been shown to be effective learning tools, comparable to individual instruction in some ways. Group lessons are two or more students taught together in a lesson format with one instructor. This is more cost- and time-efficient than individual lessons, but still provides the benefits of studying music outside the classroom setting. Research shows that group lessons can improve student performance and learning while making the best use of time and resources in instrumental music programs.
