A Series of Lithographs Focusing on French Art during the Occupation of 1940-45
Galen Gibson-Cornell
Prof. Jim Jereb, Faculty Mentor
In fulfillment of my Independent Summer Research Grant, I created a suite of eight lithographs, which explore the theme of French art and culture during the four years of the German Occupation of France during World War II. I expounded upon this theme in combining my interests in history, French culture, and printmaking into one unified approach. I designed to attain a richer understanding of human experience by examining the resilience of human artistry in the midst of inconceivable tragedy. My lithographs function as visual research documents, each exploring a different aspect of history as it relates to contemporary life; my own personal experiences fused with historical accounts. .
