The Blues of Texas: History and Evolution
Gaurab Rimal
Dr. Clifton Kreps, Faculty Mentor

Blues is said to have originated in the deep south among the African Americans. Though many cite the Mississippi delta as the place where this kind of music originated, other places seem to be ignored. Similar to and inspired by the Mississippi blues, Texas Blues is generally instrument driven. The history of Texas blues starts with Blind Lemon Jefferson, who is considered to be the prime individual for the development of blues in this area. The music then evolves into its current form through people like Lightnin' Hopkins, Freddie King and T-Bone Walker. These influential blues artists made contributions on the development of the sound of the more guitar-driven Texas blues and inspired artists and bands like Jimi Hendrix Stevie Ray Vaughn and ZZ Top.
