Commissioning a New Work For Timpani: From Concept to Concert
Jeffrey S. Zahos♦* and Girolamo Deraco♦
Dr. Michael Bump, Faculty Mentor

I have commissioned composer Girolamo Deraco to write a piece for solo timpani. Because of the relative newness of percussion instruments as solo vehicles, there exists a much smaller solo repertoire compared to other traditional instruments (strings, winds, brass, voice). This project presents a unique opportunity to bring new music to life; Music which reflects our present age and gives composers and performers a new element to their expressive voices and new experiences to audiences. Girolamo and I share similar interests in new music. Because he hails from Italy, this project represents a sort of cultural exchange which promises to be a memorable and meaningful experience for composer, performer and audience.
