Jason T. Baskin♦
Dr. Michael Bump, Faculty Mentor

Tool is widely regarded as an exceptional musical group in the rock genre; of particular note is the band's drumset player, Danny Carey. Highly esteemed due to his technical proficiency and originality, a collection of general methods of composition for Carey's drumset parts will be discussed and analyzed, drawing upon original transcriptions, studio recordings, interviews, and performances as sources. Categories to be discussed include use of toms, hi-hat, electronics, use of odd-time signatures, snare drum rudiments applied to drumset, polyrhythms, ostinati and metametrics, and methods of soloing. Examples will be analyzed and performed to assist in the illustration of these points.
