Educational technology, especially the SMARTboard, can have a definite and positive impact on student learning and engagement. However, fulfilling the need for technology in the classroom that is both affordable and engaging can be overwhelming to school district budgets, especially when items such as SMARTboards easily can cost thousands of dollars to implement. Using other, less expensive components to achieve the same ends as a SMARTboard could assist school districts greatly. By constructing an infrared pen and using a Nintendo Wii remote, computer, and projector, a teacher can effectively create a SMARTboard-like experience for a fraction of the cost of an actual SMARTboard. This paper presents an overview of the construction process of the device and results from a student survey regarding levels of interest in and perceptions of usefulness of the device.
