Determination of Organochlorine Pesticides in Local Fish
Sara N. Goehl
Dr. Barbara K. Kramer, Faculty Mentor
The presence of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in local fish in Hazel Creek Reservoir and Forest Lake in Adair Country, Missouri was determined by GC/MS. No significant evidence of harmful pesticides was found. The preparation methods sonicatation, microwave assisted extraction, and single drop microextraction were investigated and refined in order to determine an efficient and environmentally sound procedure. A combination of microwave assisted extraction and single drop microextraction was found to be the best method to determine the presence of the desired pesticides. Further research will focus on applying this method to other local fish to ensure a quality water supply for the local community.
