Family Advocacy Center: A Volunteer Mentor and Tutoring Program
Sarah B. Cooper* and Jennifer L. Miller
Dr. Carol Cox, Faculty Mentor

Eta Sigma Gamma has provided numerous volunteers for the Family Advocacy Center, which serves families of Kirksville. Interested chapter members donated time to mentor and tutor Kirksville youth. Qualified volunteers work with the FAC staff in the main office doing secretarial work and with parents and youth to provide a safe haven after school. This program is provided free of charge and targets at risk youth and their families. Volunteers work with the staff of the Family Advocacy Center to provide free professional dance and art lessons, encourage recreational skill building, teach life skills programs, provide tutoring, and serve as positive role models to the youth of Kirksville. The support provided by Gammans to the Family Advocacy Center is viewed as a vital part of the community. Because of volunteer involvement, individual attention and support has been provided thereby increasing self-esteem. This enables Kirksville youth to make sensible choices.
