Legal and Ethical Implications Surrounding Certified Nurse Midwives
Megan J. Galloway
Prof. Pamela Gardner, Faculty Mentor

Certified Nurse Midwives are increasingly being used as health care providers for women seeking care before, during, and after pregnancy. However, uncertainty still remains about the legal and ethical implications of midwifery across the nation. Most CNMs are regulated by specific state boards of nursing, but information regarding place of practice, statistics on births attended by midwives, regulation, and prescriptive authority is scarce and rarely found in published literature. This presentation seeks to clarify certain legal and ethical issues surrounding nurse midwifery by studying the aforementioned areas in 5 states across the nation.
