Analysis and Performance of Two Shorts for Brass Quintet (2007) by Allen V. Carter
Allen V. Carter♦
Dr. Warren Gooch, Faculty Mentor

Two Shorts for Brass Quintet (2007) is a brief chamber work constructed through the use of several compositional techniques including dodecaphony, chromatic aggregation, and aggregate completion. The work focuses on each of these techniques in its two movements, but in different ways. The first movement emphasizes twelve-tone procedures within a quasi-aleatoric structure. The second movement focuses on non-transposing tetrachords that form aggregates via a minimalist/strictured framework. Each movement contains motivic elements of the other, which helps provide formal unity to the composition. The presentation will involve a discussion of the composition and a performance.
