Characteristics Desired by College Athletic Directors when Hiring Coaches
Grant Agbo* and Gavin Welker
Prof. Liz Jorn, Faculty Mentor

The purpose of this study was to investigate characteristics that college Athletic Directors desire when hiring coaches at the Division II level of athletics (total surveys=213, completed surveys n= 41; f=10, m=31; average amount of experience=10.7 yrs.). Through an online survey athletic directors were asked to give their opinions and rank their top 5 characteristics in hiring a coach. Of the 41 completed surveys, leadership and coaching experience were consistently in the top 5. Success was also another quality that was noted by these athletic directors. Results of this study may be useful to college students who want to become coaches, and current coaches that want to evaluate themselves as they look to increase their marketability in this career field.
