Musical Choices in “The Alcotts" from Second Piano Sonata: “Concord, Mass. 1840-1860" by Charles Ives
Michelle L. Jones♦
Dr. Janice Saffir, Faculty Mentor

“The Alcotts,” the third movement from Charles Ives’ Second Piano Sonata: “Concord, Mass. 1840-1860,” offers more freedom for the performer in comparison to works by earlier composers. The lack of a time signature and bar lines in sections of the piece leaves the choice of metric groupings to the performer. Guidance for performance choices can be gained by comparing different editions of “The Alcotts” as well as arrangements of the work for band and orchestra. A performance of the work will demonstrate one possible rendition.
