Gardens: A Musical-Poetic Collaboration
Carol A. Perry♦* and Stephanie K. Goodwin
Dr. Warren Gooch and Dr. Thomas Hueber, Faculty Mentors

The musical composition "Gardens" is a song cycle composed by Carol Perry, using as texts poems by Stephanie Goodwin. The composer and poet collaborated throughout the creative process, leading to an interesting circumstance in which the poetry and music influenced change in one another. The form and interpretive meaning of both media were affected. The poems dictated the melodic structure, recurring motives, modes, and other expressive devices found in the music, while the musical interpretation similarly changed the structure and emphasis of the text. An analysis of the interrelationship between text and music will be provided, as well as a performance by Stephanie Goodwin, mezzo-soprano, and Cheryl Wong, pianist.
