Gender and Classroom Interactions

The classroom environment can be complex, and many factors may play a role in how different students perceive their experience and the interactions that occur between the people in the class. The question of whether gender plays a role in classroom interactions has been the subject of much prior research, yet there is still a need to understand how the experiences of women may be similar to or different from those of men. There is also a need to address other classroom characteristics, such as class size or class subject, and to analyze how these may influence students of different genders. In this research, I have conducted a survey of undergraduate students at Truman State University to address the following research questions: How do male and female students view their interactions in the college classroom and how do their interactions compare? Do differences in perceptions occur as other classroom characteristics differ? How does gender contribute to certain patterns in interactions, if at all?
