Visuomotor Adaptation to Practice in Differing Visual Environments

The objective of this study was to determine how the visuomotor system adapts to various visual displacement practice conditions. The test consisted of throwing 25 Velcro balls at a felt target while wearing vision displacement goggles. Male and female students (n = 30, ages = 18 to 23 yrs) performed 25 trials throwing a Velcro ball at a felt target with their vision displaced to the left, prior to and following involvement in one of these three practice scenarios: practice with left displacement, practice with right displacement, and no practice. One-way ANOVA and post hoc test indicated that practicing with opposite displacement produced a significantly negative score on post-test (-10.9% + 7.25), compared to left-displacement (18.8% + 11.46) or no practice (17.6% + 5.26). This study confirmed that practice with displacement to one side produced a negative effect on performance with displacement to the opposite side.
