Promotion of Sense of Belonging to Reduce Unhealthy Behaviors

Jessica N. Breyfogle* and Amy Kang
Dr. Roberta Donahue, Faculty Mentor

The purpose of this study was to investigate if the sense of belonging (SOB) among Truman students affects their likelihood of engaging in substance use/misuse. Specifically, a subset of the Missouri Assessment of College Health Behaviors (MACHB) survey results conducted by Missouri Partners in Prevention (MOPIP) on SOB and substance use/misuse was analyzed. The 2020 and 2021 data were compared for Truman students who report a SOB and those who report a lack of SOB. Although causation cannot be assumed, the findings indicate that students who lack a SOB at Truman may be more prone to engage in substance use/misuse. For example, in 2021, there were higher reported rates of tobacco use among students who lack a SOB (40%) than those who have a SOB (20%). Programs that promote a SOB among students may improve wellness by reducing unhealthy behaviors.
