College Fraternity Members' Body Image Perceptions
Female body self esteem is more vastly understood than male body self esteem, especially for fraternity men. The purpose of this study was to examine Truman Greek fraternity members’ perceptions of body image and how toxic masculinity might influence those perceptions. Participants were recruited to complete a survey (n=15; a second survey is currently active) which was composed of demographic questions, the Body Esteem Test (Franzoi and Shields, 1984), and a reflection on their fraternity. Body Esteem test results revealed participants had an average overall confidence score of 99/165 points, with sub category confidence scores in physical attractiveness (37/55), upper body strength (28.6/45), and physical condition (40/65). Additionally, nearly 87% of participants believed toxic masculinity is enforced in fraternities, and 53% compared their physical appearance to their brothers. Thus, a confidence building program addressing toxic masculinity could be helpful for fraternities.
