COVID-19 and Negative Living Environments on the Minds of College Students

Taylor A. Keathley
Dr. Anton Daughters and Dr. Brian Ott, Faculty Mentors

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused many disruptions to everyday life. Some of those disruptions were the result of decisions made by institutions to limit the spread of the virus. This research was conducted to document the effects of the decisions that many universities made in 2020. One of the decisions made was to close residence halls and send their students off-campus due to COVID. Findings were gathered by examining the website Reddit and analyzing posts that mentioned or discussed the new living environment and how the students responded to it. The results suggest that individuals who were sent away from a university to live in a negative environment or who were currently living in a negative environment experienced an increase in depressive and/or anxious feelings and an inability to focus and complete work.
