Synthesis of 5-methyl-5-sulfato-4-hydroxy-furanone

Margo C. Motes* and Rachel A. Stanfield
Dr. Tim Humphry, Faculty Mentor

Organosulfate esters are commonly found aerosolized pollutants that have been found in the atmosphere. These pollutants are frequently found in the atmosphere, however, very little is known about their properties. 5-methyl-5-sulfato-4-hydroxy-furanone is synthesized in order to study its chemical properties and verify its presence in the atmosphere.
