Community Readiness Model for Prevention: Addressing Obesity and Physical Inactivity in a Local Community

Lauren C. Shaw
Dr. Rolena Stephenson, Faculty Mentor

Community readiness evaluation has the potential to identify and address key factors contributing to a community’s readiness in terms of action and disease prevention. Based on the Community Readiness Model (CRM), a structured telephone interview procedure and scoring process were followed to assess community readiness for physical inactivity and obesity prevention in Kirksville, Missouri. Eight key informants were identified and interviewed focusing on their perspective of the community, assessing 9 stages of readiness for 6 dimensions: existing community efforts to prevent physical inactivity and obesity, community knowledge about the efforts, leadership, community climate, knowledge about the issues, and resources. Evaluation of the interviews revealed an overall readiness score of 5.00 on the 9-point scale, corresponding to the preparation stage of community readiness. It is recommended that current organizations and groups continue their interest and involvement in addressing the health issue while expanding collaboration and effectively communicating with the community.
