Secondary Substance Use Prevention Needs Assessment For a Suburban Missouri County
A secondary needs assessment was performed to gather data for alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use by using primary data from credible sources to identify disparities in St. Louis County, Missouri. Information was gathered from secondary sources about the community, and its risk and protective factors that may influence the rates of alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use in St. Louis County. Results from the study indicate alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use is prevalent in St. Louis County, with use of several substances higher than state rates. The most apparent problem found within St. Louis County is opiate-related deaths. The literature notes there may be contributing factors to high use such as high perceived substance availability, unemployment rate, and poor mental health rates. Recommendations to address county substance use issues include implementation of comprehensive, evidence-based prevention interventions that focus on decreasing county-specific risk factors and strengthening county-specific protective factors.
