The Impact of Student Choice on Assignment Scores

Hailey L. Lawrence♦
Dr. Christopher Maglio, Faculty Mentor

This study examined the impact of student choice on assignment scores. This study focused on allowing students to choose how to complete their assignments and compared those scores to assignments of the same nature where students had no choice on how to complete the assignment.  This study examined 18 fourth-grade students from a rural elementary school. The data was obtained by every student completing two RAFT (role, audience, format, and topic) assignments where they had a choice in deciding how to complete their assignments. Every student was also assigned two non RAFT assignments in which they had no choice in how to complete their assignment. All assignments were given over a two month period.Students’ scores were analyzed through descriptive statistics to find any trends and patterns in the data.It was determined that allowing student choice on assignments can have a positive impact on student assignment scores.
