The Impact of Multiplication Strategies on Multiplication Scores
The present study sought out how multiplication scores would change after implementing a variety of strategies for struggling learners in a fourth-grade classroom in rural Northeast Missouri. Multiplication is a key skill during elementary school, particularly in fourth grade as students begin learning long division. If a child struggles to multiply, that child will also struggle with dividing as they go hand in hand. It would seem that learning strategies and getting practice with multiplying would increase a student’s score. Strategies and practice were implemented through morning work, “sprint” multiplication fact sheets that students would work through for one minute each, sayings or rules to remember certain multiplication facts, and strategies used in the given curriculum. It was observed that these strategies improved some of the students’ multiplication scores throughout the study. Some students did not improve the desired amount and thus needed more practice and intervention afterward.
