Sounds of the Sahel: The Modern Development of Music From the Tuareg People
The music of the Tuareg people is an entrancing form of social engagement and personal expression that has only recently been archived and shared to the broader public. The development and increased accessibility of the Internet within the Sahel region has not only offered Tuareg musicians a global platform to perform on, but also has provided the rest of the world with a view into the cultural identity of this nomadic group. With these recordings, we can see the impact of modern instruments and technology on the Tuareg people, which in turn has revolutionized their musical sound. This presentation’s goal is to identify and elaborate upon this musical development through an analysis of various elements: the late 20th century history of the Tuareg people, the musical traditions associated with this group, and examples of recent Tuareg musical groups that have shed light on their customs.
