Quédateme Un Poco Más: An Analysis of Forms of Separation by Dr. Victor Marquez-Barrios
In music inspired by social injustices, techniques such as multiphonics, backing tracks, and chord progressions are implemented by composers to disseminate information regarding a specific topic. In this case, injustice faced by immigrants is one of those topics. In an attempt to amplify Hispanic and Latinx composer voices, this research paper aims to discuss injustice in the Hispanic and Latinx community and how these injustices inspired composer Dr. Victor Marquez-Barrios to compose "Forms of Separation."
Through analysis of musical procedures, technique, and literature, this paper will focus on three modalities of separation: forced detachment, yearning, and remotion and how they pertain to the three movements of the piece: Zero Tolerance, Quédateme Un Poco Más, and Homesick Waltz. Finally, I will discuss musical compositions as a form of elucidation for social justice. I will be implementing a socio-musicological and ethnomusicological approach.
