Impacting Climate Change: Mitigation Strategies to Reduce Damage Done by Animal Agriculture

Caroline G. Vogl
Dr. Christine Harker and Dr. Bridget Thomas, Faculty Mentors

One of the most critical issues impacting climate change is large-scale animal agriculture. In a study released by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN, researchers show how deforestation, greenhouse gas emissions due to production, and excessive water use are the predominant consequences of the industry (Steinfeld, Gerber, Wassenaar, et al.). While changes need to be made to the industry, our current food system relies on animal agriculture both as a consistent food source and employer. Experts have proposed mitigation strategies to reduce the effects on the environment while ensuring economic viability. This research will look at how the effects of climate change are worsened due to contributions from animal agriculture. Additionally, it will examine and compare various mitigation strategies and how they affect both the environment and prosperity. This will aid in demonstrating why reducing animal agriculture must be a priority to curb climate change.
