Authenticity in High School English Student Writing
While teaching students formulas for writing can help them master formal writing, it can be detrimental to the levels of authenticity -- writing with their own voice -- students are putting into their writing. Students can begin to feel negatively towards writing because they are not able to be themselves or write about what they want. As a student, I was beginning to fall into this pattern of not writing authentically. The only time I was writing authentically was when I was journaling or writing reflectively. Building on my own experience, I wanted to ask the research question, “How does reflective writing impact a student’s ability to write authentically in all forms of writing?” Through the process of having students reflectively write daily I was able to find answers to this question by measuring stamina for writing through length, and positive feelings towards writing through a post-research survey answered by students.
