The Presence of Natural Knee Hyperextension puts Athletes at Higher Risk for ACL Tears

Makenzie A. Crawford♦
Dr. Brandy Schneider, Faculty Mentor

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine if knee hyperextension could be linked to ACL tears. Significance: This study is one of the first to study visual leg alignments being related to ACL injuries. Methods: An original electronic survey was completed by current collegiate athletes. Results: There was no significance found between visual leg alignment and predicting an ACL injury. It was found after an ACL-R, patients tend to view their injured leg alignment differently than non-injured. Conclusion: Visual leg alignment cannot be used as a sole predictive measure for an ACL injury with athletes. Since ACL-R patients perceive their injured leg alignment differently, further research should be conducted to determine the cause of this phenomenon.
