The Impact of Note Taking Styles in a High School Biology Classroom on Learning Outcomes
Technology in the classroom is becoming increasingly the norm and not the exception, as more K-12 districts supply their students with a computer of some kind. Educators are faced with the decision of how the technology is integrated into the classroom to ensure that the technology is being used in a meaningful and purposeful way. One common substitution is using computers to type notes instead of handwriting them on paper. In this study, 41 tenth grade biology students were tasked with taking lecture notes either on paper or on the computer. Quizzes and tests were regularly administered over the materials during the course of the unit of study. Scores were collected and analysed to address the question at hand: Is one method of note taking more effective than the other? The impact of congruent and incongruent note taking and assessment types was also investigated. The study is currently underway, and no results have yet been collected and analysed.
