Multimodal Literacy and Student Learner Identity Formation
Multimodality is used as a tool to show students the different ways they can express an idea or message through different composition styles. The exploration of particular modes of writing in the classroom can also influence and encourage students to discover and develop their own sense of identity. Multimodality can better help students understand who they are as individuals and within their various communities, using various modes to better express themselves and understand who they are as learners.
Therefore, the purpose of this study, situated in a 10th grade English classroom, was to promote student learning and support development of students’ learner identities through multimodal activities, exploring the potential of multimodality to support student identity formation. Using student artifacts from the beginning and end of the unit in addition to student reflections of their performance and work, this research investigated how certain identities are formed and established through multimodal writing.
