Mental Health and Alcohol Consumption at Truman State University: A Need for Change?

Kavya Singh
Dr. Brian Ott, Faculty Mentor

Even prior to the increase since the spread of COVID-19, there was a concerning mental health epidemic in the U.S.  One explanation identified in previous research is a link between poor mental health and alcohol consumption. With at least one suicide per academic year and five during the 2016-2017 academic year at Truman State University, more research is urgently needed to better understand the state of mental health and mental health services on our campus. A random sample of 800 students were sent a survey to gauge their opinions on Truman’s mental health facility and alcohol consumption policies. 800 students (15% response rate) have helped further the research in finding ways to improve the mental health and alcohol consumption at Truman. With a combination of an interview with a representative of Truman’s University Counseling Services (UCS) and student survey responses, this research attempts to find ways to further improve mental health and find alternatives or reasonings for dangerous alcohol consumption.
